“No one will remember me … I’ve never done anything lasting.”

When I was a little girl, maybe four or five, I was once separated from my parents in a large department store. One moment I was standing beside them and the next moment they were gone. I can vividly recall the details from my childlike viewpoint, running up and down the aisles, rounding the corners, looking for my father and only seeing an endless ocean of strangers’ faces. I remember the sheer panic and the fear I was now on my own forever. Perhaps they had forgotten me, gone home and left me there.

Irrational, yes, but not to a small girl who wasn’t even old enough to cross the street alone.

Elvis Presley feared he would someday be forgotten. I can understand that feeling. I feel it. I’ve felt forgotten. We all have from time to time. It’s a horrible and miserable notion that aches from within. As an adult, it presents totally different than from a child’s immature view.

Focusing on the life of Elvis Presley, we know the likelihood of him fading into nothingness was an absurd impossibility. It’s as irrational as a child’s viewpoint. But in the moment, his concerns were his own valid feelings. That breaks my heart that he sincerely felt something so untrue.

“That’s Someone You Never Forget” is a beautiful emotive rendition of a loving attachment that time can never erase. It was penned by Red West in 1962. It is said it was an ode to Gladys Presley, someone so dear to Elvis that he could never forget her. It expresses the mind’s longing enrichment to be with a person who was once very important, a nod to their lasting memory. I think Gladys would be honored and she would assure her son that he too would never be forgotten.

The voice of the emotions are totally realistic and convincing. Listen with your heart. Is there someone whom you will never forget as well?

That’s Someone You Never Forget

(lyrics and music by Red West)

The way she held your hand

The little things you planned

Her memory is with you yet

That’s someone you never forget

When she is far away

You’ll think of her each day

And you know she’ll wait for you

That’s someone you never forget

Others may pass your way

And let you think their love is true

But you know that they’ll never replace

The one that waits for you

The way she held your hand

The little things you planned

Her memory is with you yet

That’s someone you never forget

That’s someone you never forget
