Jim Darling, Darling Clementine, Wendy Darling and the Darling children, forever my darling, Little Darlin’, Hello Darlin’, for my darling I love you and I always will …

  • Forever my darling our love will be true. Always and forever I’ll love only you … SIGH

Dar-ling – definition

used as an affectionate form of address to a beloved person.

  • “Little darlin’, little darlin’, Oh where, are you”
  • “Oh, my love, my darling, I’ve hungered for your touch, a long lonely time”
  • “For my darling I love you, and I always will”

Maybe because it’s a southern term of endearment heard from day one along with requesting sweet tea and blessing your heart, “darling” 100% melts me.

Maybe it’s because Elvis Presley once said “darlin” to me in that way that only he could do, setting the bar exceptionally high.

There are a lot of sweet nothings to grace one’s ears. It could be dear, sweetheart, lover, baby, sweetie pie, sugar, angel, honey, muffin – so many that run the gamut from ageless to new age. Bae and boo may sound foreign to me but to millennials, it’s their love lingo.

Out of all the beautiful, lovely pet names and romantic monikers sprinkled about the universe, everyone has their personal favorite. According to a study, people who use private nicknames are happier in their relationships than people who do not. I believe it.

Using nicknames makes us more intimate, or closer to each other. When we use these nicknames for people we love, or even just people we want to be friendly with, it makes us closer to them. I totally get it and be honest – you do too. Elvis Presley can call me “darlin” any day of the week.

Adoring terms from strangers often drive me crazy. No need to call me sweetie when you take my order. Baby and darling are reserved for certain individuals. Loose use assuredly weakens the meaning.

In 1976, recorded in the Jungle Room at Graceland, Pledging My Love is an offering from that voice like no other. It’s beauty is soft and sultry and the words melt from his lips to our hearts.

And the way he croons “Forever my darling our love will be true, always and forever I’ll love only you” is a perpetual thing of beauty.

Enjoy this one. Even though it contains three more “dears” than “darlings”, it’s still a favorite of mine. Old habits are hard to break.
